Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser from
Madrid. She was a fervent performer as a child, and reenacted TV commercials to
keep the family entertained. However, she decided to devote her time to
dancing. After studying classical ballet for nine years at the Spanish National
Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of highly acclaimed
dancers. She realized her true calling at 15 years old when she beat more than 300
other girls in an audition with a talent agency. She was then offered roles on
Spanish television and music videos. The contract resulted in a variety of
performances, which opened the doors to a career in the big screen. Cruz made

actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge
hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck changed
completely in 1998 when the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) won
her the award for award for the Best Actress Goya. After a few more attempts at
film in the English language Cruz's first international breakthrough was
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) where she portrayed an unchaste but
well-meaning nun. When the film was lavishly adorned with awards and praises,
